Trends Support Need to Improve Student Readiness

Current Events , eLearning , SmarterMeasure , SmarterServices

In the annual Distance Education Survey Results published by Instructional Technology Council, trends support the need to address improving student readiness and retention.  SmarterMeasure learning readiness indicator is in line with these goals.  Measuring personal attributes like time management and procrastination, learning styles, life factors, reading rate and recall, technical competency, and typing speed and accuracy SmarterMeasure provides a complete profile of a student's readiness level to study at a distance.

The survey went on to say programs lack staff and resources to be successful.  SmarterMeasure also offers to students remedial helps that assist them in overcoming their weaknesses, while administrators can use the student data to respond to them appropriately.

As enrollments in community colleges continue to grow, retention will be key to maximize on economic impact.  Implementing a learning readiness indicator in distance learning orientations will be the smart thing to do!  Check out SmarterMeasure today and inquire about a FREE trial phase!

Fun with PowerPoint

FREE Resources , SmarterServices , YouTube

Have you ever seen a slide from a presentation and thought "that was cool"?  Well that is what sparked my interest about a recent blog post from Articulate with a tutorial I watched regarding spicing up PowerPoint.  I was surprised it was a slideshow and not some more elaborate program.  Using the instructions from the tutorial, I created a slide with my own photo. Since it was so easy and COOL, I wanted to pass it on.  It shows how to use snapshot focus with people but the same steps could be applied to a variety of subjects.  Try it!  The estimated time to complete it is about 15 minutes if you are a schooled user of PowerPoint.

iPad...Useful in Education or Not?

eLearning , FREE Resources , In the news , SmarterServices

It seems as though there are new technologies or devices launching on a monthly basis to help us do things better and faster!  The recent release of Apple's iPad is no exception.  In short, it seems to be an overgrown iPhone that you use for virtually anything but to make a phone call (well not yet anyway).  Some describe it as the iPhone and laptop reproducing.  Whatever your take, one thing is for sure, it will become a part of the educational world one way or the other.

Kevin Cummings of EdGalaxy (a cool site for nerdy teachers) warns red flags should go up when products claim to "revolutionize education" when they haven't been used extensively to prove theory.   A recent blog post from his site list the pros and cons to using the iPad in an educational setting.  He references battery life, multi-tasking, breakability, cheap apps, and more.

Life Factors Section of SmarterMeasure Makes Its Debut!

Life Factors is now available!  We are so excited to announce the launch of our new section of SmarterMeasure called Life Factors.  For the past eight years SmarterServices have been doing a good thing. Now we are preparing to do a great thing.  Our SmarterMeasure learning readiness assessment (formerly known as READI – Readiness for Education At a Distance Indicator) has been helping students understand things that internal to themselves that impact their ability to succeed in an eLearning environment.  Examples of these internal aspects include their learning styles, their individual attributes like motivation and willingness to ask for help, their technical competency, their typing ability and their reading ability.  Helping students understand more about these things  are internal to them has been a good thing.  But experienced educators know that many times students do not continue their education because of things that are external to them.  These external factors can be things in their life like having to work many hours at a job, health issues, financial issues, lack of support from family, etc.  With the addition of the new Life Factors section, SmarterMeasure will help students because they will receive a measure of the impact that these “life factors” may have on their educational plans.  To learn more about the new section, click here and view a message from the president, Dr. Mac Adkins.
